PROGRAM 4

ruebikes

take it to the street

Program four is Ruebikes vision for the future. It outlines a series of realistic and achievable stages by which we can set goals. There is an immediate and real need for a nonprofit that focuses on bicycles in the Gresham area. Specifically targeting groups which have the greatest difficulty making life changes, the outreach is designed around the homeless and poor families. Relief for the greater suffering in our local community starts with every individual member. Join the cause and take it to the streets.

Stage One

Mobile Bike Clinic

Rue bikes is currently establishing an outreach network with local soup kitchens, in order to identify clients with bicycle related needs. We will rotate the mobile clinic to a new location each week, to identify potential clients, and meet the need right on the spot. Tools and education about maintenance and repair will be provided free of charge. Volunteers will be available on site to share life stories and create a personal bond.

Stage Two

Trailers For the Homeless

Once we have developed relationships with the clients, we will know exactly what needs each individual has. The idea is to create a care package contained in a bicycle trailer with everything someone might need to make a camp. Equipped with a sleeping bag, a tent, a camp stove, can opener, and some canned goods. Each person will then have the ability to make a camp and prepare a meal. This is where sustainability starts.

Stage Three

Bike Donation Center

Once the network has grown to connect with a larger number of clients, a bicycle donation center will be established. This will allow for the people of the community to make a charitable contribution by giving an old bicycle. Each bike will be brought into full working order, and given to a good home. Along with a trailer care package, we can give the gift of mobility and independence. This is the first step towards life change.

Stage Four

Children's Bicycle Swap

There are many families in the community who are living at or below the poverty level. Many children do not have bicycles, and many others outgrow their bikes so fast that parents cannot purchase a new one. In the final stage, we will establish a children's bicycle swap program. Families will be able to trade in their children's bikes for the next larger size. The old bike will then be repaired and re assigned to a new child.
